Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people never develop wisdom teeth and for others, they erupt normally and cause no pain. Most people develop impacted wisdom teeth that may grow at an angle towards the next teeth or towards the back of the mouth or straight up or down but stuck within the jawbone.
Problems with impacted wisdom teeth
1. Infection and gum disease
2. Pain
3. Tooth decay in a partially erupted wisdom tooth
4. Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone
5. Growth of a fluid-filled cyst
If you have any of these problems, wisdom teeth extractions may be done by an oral surgeon. During wisdom teeth extractions, your oral surgeon may follow the following steps:
1. Make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone
2. Shave some bone off to reach the tooth
3. Divide the tooth into sections to remove it
4. Properly clean the area
5. Put some dissolvable stitches
6. Put gauze to control bleeding
After wisdom teeth surgery, it is important to follow some instructions:
1. You can manage pain with an over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications given by your oral surgeon.
2. Use an ice pack to control your cheek swelling.
3. Drink lots of water and stay away from alcoholic, heavily caffeinated, or hot beverages in the first 24 hours.
4. You should eat only soft foods such as yogurt and ice cream for the first 24 hours. Avoid hot or spicy food.
5. If you smoke, then it is important to avoid it for at least 72 hours after the surgery.
6. Do not exercise or engage in any strenuous activities for 1 week
